History of Painting
1200s – 1500s: Artisans have been commissioned to paint houses throughout the course of history. Pointing back to the early years of the 11th century, the signs suggest house painting as a trade. Professionals have been painting houses seemingly since the early 1200s. House painter guilds began to gain popularity in England by the 14th century. These guilds established the field as a respected profession and would set specific standards for house painting. Painting skills were closely guarded secrets in order to protect their livelihood as the guild members treated their mixing techniques for creating the desired house paint color.
Colonial America: Viewed the practice as a demonstration of arrogance, wealth and vanity in early colonial America, pilgrims avoided house painting. After painting the interior of his home in 1630, a Charlestown preacher faced criminal charge of sacrilege. In any case, the demands continued grow. Berries, fruits, lead, iron, copper, and other ingredients to create a wide variety of types and colors of paint during this era, along with the base material of oil and water were combined with the array of ingredients. The paints needed for walls, ceilings, cornices provided homeowners with the color options. Made from a variety of hairs, the brushes with wooden handles were the tools of the trade. 1700s – 1880s: The best method for grinding pigment materials effectively and manufacturing paint in a mill fueled the search in 1718 by Marshall Smith’s “Machine for the Grinding of Colors”. Because it cost less and protected the painted wood linseed oil became the preferred binding agent in the mid 1800’s and by the 1866, the first company produced ready to use paint with the now familiar re-sealable tin can.
20th Century: Research and development of chemicals designed to improve the mixing of paint throughout the 1900s was a paint company that invested significant resources. Becoming an indispensable tool for house paint color selection, the computer based color-matching system was designed 1982.
