How to Clean & Prep Garage Floor for Epoxy Coating

Before you begin painting, you must first prep the floor. You will want to clean all oil stains and other greasy spots on the floor. Use a scraper, and scrape up all the dirt and debris off the floor, and sweep up the fragments. You will then spread a degreaser over any oil spots. Next, wash the floor thoroughly. You can also use a pressure washer should you choose. Each pretreatment is recommended when washing the concrete. This helps open the pores of the concrete, making the epoxy stick better to the floor. After it has been thoroughly washed, allow it to completely dry. You can place a fan to help dry the floor faster. After it has been cleaned, patch up the cracks in the foundation. Do one last important job: use a shop-vac or regular vacuum to make sure there is not dirt left on the floor.

Now that the floor has been cleaned, it’s time to paint the floor. Epoxy floor painting kits comes with part A and part B paint cans. You will need to mix them together. Pour part A into the can of part B and mix them well. Follow the directions and allow proper reaction time. Start painting in the far back corner of the garage. You will only paint small sections at a time. In each section near the walls, use a paint brush and paint the edges first. Then use a paint roller with an extension poll to make the task easier. Again only roll small sections at a time. While the epoxy paint is still wet, spread the colored flakes to make sure it sticks to the floor. Repeat this process. Work from the inside of the garage and work from side to side until you slowly work your way out of the garage. Each epoxy painting kit varies. Some only require the paint and flakes. However some require a primer, paint, and a vinyl coating. Read the materials before you purchase a kit. If you buy one that requires you prime the floor, you will want to apply the primer first. Again do that in sections. Make sure the floor is completely dry before applying the final coating. When the floor is dry, put the vinyl coating down.
